The Milliner as an Artist
The hats I create are celebrations of fiber, color, nature and are artistic creations in their own right.
In the early 70's, I realized that I could easily sell hats, fun, colorful, functional, and necessary in the Northern New England but alas, not such a great reaction to my artistic creations. So I set about making hats for others and painting for myself. First, my cousin had an elderly gentleman that was an accomplished artist teaching her, so I climbed on the bandwagon, got some oil paints and canvas and headed off to class. Through the years there have been an assortment of Adult Education programs that offered art classes in Dover-Foxcroft and Old Town and later, when I returned to school, my electives were art classes at the University of Maine with noted Maine Artists, Micheal Vermette and Micheal Lewis, past Chair of the Art Department of UMO.
